SEATTLE SEAHAWKS HISTORY

The Seattle Seahawks are a National Football League (NFL)  team. The Seahawks have called home three different stadiums, the Kingdome from 1976-1999, Husky Stadium from 2000-2001 and they have been home at Qwest Field since 2002. The Seahawks were founded in 1976 and are one of four teams playing in the Western Division of the National Football Conference (NFC).  On June 4, 1974, the National Football League awarded its 28th franchise to Seattle to play in the 64,984-seat Kingdome. The Seahawks entered the National Football League (NFL) as an expansion team along with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1976. A year later, they switched conferences with their expansion partners, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and joined the AFC West. They played in the American Conference until 2002, when, with league realignment, they were returned to the National Football Conference.

In the club’s first season, quarterback Jim Zorn passed for more than 2,500 yards and was named the league’s top offensive rookie. Jack Patera was named coach of the year in 1978 after leading the Seahawks to their first winning season. Zorn led the AFC in passing yardage that year, and wide receiver Steve Largent notched the first of his eight 1,000-yard seasons. By their third season, the Seahawks posted a winning record which they repeated in 1979. The 1980s featured more winning ways with several playoff appearances for the Seahawks. The team advanced to the American Football Conference (AFL) championship for the first time in 1983 and claimed its first division title in 1988. They claimed their second division title in 1999. With it's six playoff appearances, the Seattle Seahawks have never won or been to a Super Bowl Championship game.

The Seattle Seahawks jersey colors are, lime green, slate grey,  navy blue and white.  The Seattle Seahawks Helmet design is a stylized hawk's head inspired by Northwestern tribal art. The Seattle Seahawks have three players who have been inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. This players are defensive end Carl Eller, Franco Harris (Harris was the key to one of the most famous plays in football, known as the Immaculate Reception.)  and Steve Largent.  The Seattle Seahawks have retired the following numbers #12, which is dedicated to Seahawks fans, the so called "12th man," # 80, belonging to Steve Largent . The nickname Seahawks was chosen as a result of a contest that brought together over twenty thousand entrants and suggested over one thousand five hundred different names. Seahawks was suggested by one hundred and fifty one entrants and picked by the team ownership as the best choice.
